On the first Monday of each month we roll out our Monthly MLB Report Card (forever to be known as MMLBRC) for the Mets, Phillies and Yankees. We’ll still check in from time to time with short posts to quickly take the pulse of each team, but think of the MMLBRC as an in depth physical (anal probing not included). Truthfully, a month is probably too small of a sample size to make overarching claims like we will attempt to, but dammit, you want content! So rather than write well-reasoned quarterly updates, we’ll make rash decisions based on far too little data. Our first stop: scenic Flushing.

Kryptonite

Since last we joined you, Faithful Reader, two nails have been violently hammered into the Mets coffin for the 2008 campaign. The sweep in San Diego was the first, and today’s loss to Arizona was the second and far more demoralizing. There’s still a lot of baseball left (97 games, to be exact), which is the only reason a loss like today’s doesn’t seal the coffin shut. We are not here to take stock of what’s gone wrong, because the answer is everything on any given night. Instead, we are here to analyze why so much has gone so sour. Continue reading

*Note: we know, today’s Tuesday and not Monday. But we’ve been a little busy over the past few weeks, so deal with it.

Opening Day at Shea
With the PC Coaching Search dominating our thoughts recently, we’ve been a little lax on keeping you updated with the young baseball season after our initial live blogging efforts. But yesterday’s Phils/Mets contest gives us occasion to jump back into America’s pastime.
We’re certainly not in the business of jumping to conclusions (bonus points: second Tom Smykowski reference within a month), but there’s a couple of lessons we can take from yesterday’s game.

Live Blog: Reclaiming the Throne
We’ll avoid the chest thumping of our Philly brethren, and simply sit back and enjoy watching the best pitcher in the game make his Mets debut. This year is a clean slate, so settle in as we take you through opening day with Johan Santana on the bump in Miami.

Play ball!
After an excruciatingly long dose of spring training games and debating rosters, we finally get some meaningful on-field action tonight. With the season opening stateside tonight and tomorrow, we thought we’d go on record with our picks for the 2008 season.
