Let’s play a little game called “Guess what I’ve been up to the last two weeks.” Here’s a couple of choices for you…
- Absolutely nothing
- Contemplating complex philosophical questions like the meaning of life
- Curling into the fetal position and crying myself to sleep every night because of law school exams
- Curling into the fetal position and crying myself to sleep every night because Philadelphia was celebrating 100 seasons of ineptitude
I guess #3 and #4 encapsulate it best. And then today, as I continued to cry and babble incoherently about Shawn Bradley, Joe Carter and Ronde Barber, I realized, “Hey, Kev, you’ve got a blog. You’ve got something to live for. Get up and write something.”
The above picture is a bit of a misnomer, since we haven’t exactly “covered” tomorrow’s NFL Draft. In fact, we don’t believe we’ve mentioned it, and since it’s less than 24 hours until we get a constant dose of that man pictured above, we figured it was high time we did something.
“Will the Eagles make a splash in free agency?” I asked on Thursday. Well, “no” was my answer, and if you haven’t yet heard, I was mistaken. The Birds inked former Pats CB Asante Samuel to a 6-year, $57 million deal on the first day of free agency, and for an encore, snagged pass rushing specialist DE Chris Clemons with a 5-year, $18.5 million deal on Saturday.
Let’s give the Eagles credit where credit is due: they got Samuel in and got a deal done promptly, netting themselves the best defensive impact player on offer in free agency. But you’ll have to forgive me if I wait to pass judgment until I see how everything shakes out.
In a word… no. This year’s free agent crop was devastated by the dreaded franchise tag, with potential gamebreakers such as Jared Allen, Dallas Clark, and Marcus Trufant failing to hit the market. This year’s free agent frenzy will be much like the last few: a lot of money being thrown at guys who don’t deserve to be paid such amounts.
While you can never rule out the Birds making a big move, their biggest splash may have to come on draft day. Still, that won’t stop us from examining their team needs (in no particular order) and the direction they might look to head in when the clock strikes midnight on Thursday night…
