Live Blog: The End of An Era?

In what could well be the last game Tim Welsh slicks back the hair as Providence’s coach, we’ll take you through the Friars match up against West Virginia with live scoring updates and analysis. Flashes of potential

We sincerely doubt that anyone is lining up to thank Tim Welsh on his way out the door, but Friar fans everywhere should offer him a hearty handshake and a slap on the back for what he did last Thursday against UConn. While Timmy himself is still a dead man walking, he left the Friar faithful with an important parting gift: evidence that this team has some serious talent.

Now you see it, now you don’t

This past weekend was yet another step toward the completion of the Friars’ season long magic trick: making Tim Welsh disappear.

Losses to Big East powerhouses Louisville and Georgetown pushed PC’s record to 13-13 overall (4-10 in the Big East) and pushed Welsh a bit further out the door. But the greatest disappearing act was undoubtedly that performed by the team itself, as they blew second-half leads in each game.

We introduce you to… a program on life support

You join us at an interesting time for the PC men’s basketball program: we’re witnessing the death throes of the decade-long Tim Welsh era, as a team picked to finish eighth in the Big East has stumbled to a 13-10 mark overall and a 4-7 record in conference play. While Friar fans have begun to compile their lists for potential Welsh replacements, we’ll just point out that Welsh is merely a dead man walking at this point, and not yet a dead man (as long as PC AD Bob Driscoll is to be believed). So we’ll save our discussion of candidates for another day, but don’t worry… it’s something we plan to consider at length.

And let’s not forget Providence

Really, how could we? Our dreams are haunted every night by the mascot, a “Friar” that does his best to uphold the sterling reputation of priests in modern American society.
