On the first Monday of each month we roll out our Monthly MLB Report Card (forever to be known as MMLBRC) for the Mets, Phillies and Yankees. We’ll check in early each week from here on out with short posts to quickly take the pulse of each team, but think of the MMLBRC as an in depth physical (anal probing not included). Truthfully, a month is probably too small of a sample size to make overarching claims like we will attempt to, but dammit, you want content! So rather than write well-reasoned quarterly updates, we’ll make rash decisions based on far too little data. Last, but not least: The Amazins. Enjoy!
*Note: we know, today’s Tuesday and not Monday. But we’ve been a little busy over the past few weeks, so deal with it.

The above picture is a bit of a misnomer, since we haven’t exactly “covered” tomorrow’s NFL Draft. In fact, we don’t believe we’ve mentioned it, and since it’s less than 24 hours until we get a constant dose of that man pictured above, we figured it was high time we did something.

Look, I don’t claim to be an expert on hockey. I’ve put up a couple of Flyers posts here, but once they starting sinking like the Titanic in mid-February, I figured injuries had done them in and that it was time to focus our attention on the future for a team with a pretty young core. But let’s just say that their first round series with the Washington Capitals officially sucked me back in.

Yeah the Pistons are more talented, more experienced, and on their home court. Yeah the Sixers — based on their roster — have absolutely no right to be where they are right now. Yeah every expert on God’s green earth picked the Pistons to roll in this series, and we’d have been hard-pressed to see it otherwise.
But isn’t that why we watch?

Today Providence College announced Keno Davis as the 14th coach in Friars’ history. To say we are excited about this hire would be an understatement. Davis meets just about every criteria we wanted in the next coach — defensive-minded, smart, adaptable, energetic, charismatic and young. There are minor questions (can he or his staff recruit; is one year as a head coach enough time at the helm), none of which worry us with a man who was recently named the AP National Coach of the Year and is the definition of a basketball lifer. Today is a day for PC fans to celebrate — there is joy, hope and optimism again in Friartown. The cloud has been lifted.

This is what’s known in the corporate world as a public relations nightmare.
Those who have followed the… wait, shit, this isn’t Jim Larranaga again. We got rejected by another mid-major coach? Wow, talk about a bad couple of weeks for Providence hoops. Is there a panic button somewhere around here to press?
UMass head man Travis Ford (circled above) spurned the opportunity to take over Providence’s program, and it leaves PC still searching for a coach a month after Tim Welsh was canned.

With the PC Coaching Search dominating our thoughts recently, we’ve been a little lax on keeping you updated with the young baseball season after our initial live blogging efforts. But yesterday’s Phils/Mets contest gives us occasion to jump back into America’s pastime.
We’re certainly not in the business of jumping to conclusions (bonus points: second Tom Smykowski reference within a month), but there’s a couple of lessons we can take from yesterday’s game.

Now that we’ve had a few days to digest the Larranaga decision, and the landscape has changed for other coaching openings, it’s time to reassess where Providence stands in its coaching search. Bob Driscoll has a second chance to investigate some coaches that should have been in the mix from the start, as well as pursue a few interesting new names that have recently surfaced. As always, there are candidates we hope Driscoll avoids like the plague as well. After the jump, we rank and break down the 10 most likely choices to be the Friars next head coach.
